“We pushed the boat out a little bit with this one. This will make a really special gift for anyone that has a deep appreciation of wine. When it was released it was, I am told the most expensive South African wine at the time. Certainty if not the most expensive it was still right up there. It takes a certain amount of bravado to make a new product and then price it right at the top of the tree. The man who made it had been making fantastic wine for years before that at Rust en Vrede, wines that are still revered today. Thus there was substance behind the confidence. Kevin himself identified the site where Waterford stands today and is deeply entrenched in every detail of the philosophy of the wine. The Jem was made to be an expression of the very best sites on the estate. It is a blend of at least 8 different cultivars through the backbone of the blend is always Cabernet Sauvignon. It is truly one of the most iconic South African wines ever produced and is regarded by many as the yardstick for premium wine. The first vintage of the Jem was 2004 and we are absolutely delighted to have been able to get a few bottles of that vintage to offer in the xmas store. The 04 Jem is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, Mouvedre and Barbera. It is fantastic to be able to have the opportunity to present something iconic, it is even more amazing to be able to present the very first one made. “
