“This is a wonderful serious summer wine, not the sort of wine to knock back by the pool in copious amounts. Rather the sort of wine you would have with a seafood platter, with an idyllic view and good company.”

The texture on this wine is the real hero; it is just simply outstanding. You feel like you can literally chew on the wine. The texture is surrounded by prominent ripe yellow lemon flavours, hints or freshly cut grass and yellow plum. It has a pleasant persistent acidity, that provides a lovely zing that contrasts the creamy texture beautifully. The nose is highlighted by a pretty Jasmine aromatic. This is a wonderful serious summer wine, not the sort of wine to knock back by the pool in copious amounts. I have long admired the Creation brand. Working in marketing for another winery I often peered over to have a look at what they were up to. I often had a touch of envy about all the stuff they got right from a marketing perspective. Marketing is not all that they get right, their wines are pretty damn good. They have a unique terroir in the Hemmel en Aarde Ridge, and they make it work really well for them. Like many producers in that area they are well known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but they boast a really diverse array of wines in their portfolio. Because of their location in cool climate conditions, every one of these wines is unique in its own way, very different from your typical South African expression of the varietals. What I did not know and was delighted to discover is that within that portfolio they had a previously unreleased 100% semillon. I really enjoy Semillon. It is a white varietal that has incredible character and complexity. Depending on how it’s made its flavour profile can stretch from green and grassy to bright yellow fruits and white flowers. Sometimes you can get all of that in a single glass. It works well in wood and wood brings out a wonderful creamy texture in the wine. It is a mystery for me why more people do not drink and love semillon. Finally in my opinion of all the white varieties it ages witches the most grace and really packs on the complexity as it develops. The Creation Semilon did not disappoint my lofty expectations. It is a really fine example, it is a 2019 thus still very young and shows quite a lot of fruit upfront. What I love the most about it though is the texture. The mouthfeel is just fabulous, it has a lovely creaminess to it. I find that texture is a great window of what a wine will develop into and for a wine this young to already show such character its future is bright.
