“Ripe plum black currant and cherries all those wonderful dark fruits that remind you of Christmas are prominent on the nose and on the palate. I dare use the note Christmas cake aromatics, and though rather simplistic it is an incredibly appropriate way to describe this wine. Long on the finish and a wonderful chewy texture.”

Christmas can be strange in the Southern Hemisphere, christmas carols, christmas movies, even back in the day when there were postcards, it is all about snow and freezing weather and comforting winter food. Consequently most christmas meals involve indulgent slow roasts, baked pastries and that kind of thing. It is strange because for us the sun is shining brightest around christmas time. For our last release before Christmas we thought we would pay our respects to tradition and select something that fits the bill as far as traditional christmas food goes. A nice big warming red wine that you can slowly sip while chewing on roast turkey dripping in gravy. There are lots of options and it would have been easier to find a Bordeaux style blend or a cabernet fir for purpose. That though would not be the Somm on Call way. We thus figured we would look a little bit out the box and we came up with Touriga. Touriga is the main varietal used in the production of port, and what is more chrismasy then Port. Portugues varietals are found in plenty in South Africa for the production of Port style wines and in recent times a number of producers have been experimenting with making still wines with them. We have selected Bergisg as our producer of choice. They have been making a stand alone Touriga for a very long time and they understand the ins and outs of it quite well. We selected the 2015 as we feel that it has reached a window where it is showing beautifully. Opulent fruit upfront lots of structure and a long juicy finish. It is exactly the wine we are looking for to go on the Christmas table
